Primera Fiesta de Instalación Linux en La Paz, Bolivia (o : "Instalación de Linux a 11.784 pies (algo más alto?)")
La última semana tuvo lugar un evento histórico para la comunidad Linux: El más alto evento de instalación Linux en el mundo, se realizo en La Paz, Bolivia -
11.000 pies sobre el nivel del mar.
11.000 pies sobre el nivel del mar, hay menos oxÃgeno de lo que generalmente se necesita para respirar y estará jadeando incluso al recorrer la empinada más pequeña de la ciudad. El agua hierve sólo a 88 grados Celcius (190,40 grados Farenheit) por la baja presión del aire.
En las altas y frias tierras con una vista espectacular de las montañas de los Andes cubiertas por la nieve, apenas se nota que está cerca al Ecuador y las junglas de anacondas y jaguares. Aqui el evento de instalación Linux mas alto del mundo tuvo lugar el sabado 12 de octubre, a 11.000 pies sobre el nivel del
mar. Fue el primer evento de su clase en esta parte de Bolivia (La Paz) y quizás ¿ Puede ser un record mundial en eventos de instalación Linux a tal altitud ?

Bienvenidos - CDs de Linux para todos!
Pocas personas de La Paz se encargaron de organizar el "Festival de Instalación Linux". Todo fue hecho por primera vez: Posters, el logo, el sitio web, el formulario para inscribirse y muchas cosas mas. "Si, esto es mucho trabajo, pero se siente bien hacer algo tangible por la comunidad Linux", dice Hardy Beltran M. quien ha sido uno de los principales impulsadores en la preparación del evento.
Gracias al apoyo económico de la organización para el "Software Libre" en Dinamarca fue posible entregar CDs de linux a todos los participantes y cubrir los costos para posters, una tarjeta de red y otras cosas necesarias para hacer posible el evento.
La gente llega
El evento fue anunciado para iniciarse a las 01:00 PM, pero de acuerdo a la "hora boliviana" la gente comenzo a llegar a las 01:30 PM. En hora y media el lugar estaba totalmente lleno de gente, máquinas y diferentes dispositivos, y asà continuó el resto del dÃa. El sonido de alrededor de 30 personas hablando y discutiendo sobre linux llenaban el lugar, la temperatura se elevaba - y la atención se volcaba en las máquinas que iniciaban la pantalla de Bienvenida de Red Hat.
"220 o 110 voltios" y la prensa está aquÃ...
Un aspecto tecnico interesante de La Paz es que encontrariá dos redes de electricidad paralelas: Una de 110 voltios y otra de 220 voltios. También ncontraras dos diferentes enchufes - y no hay forma de distinguir cual es cual. Por lo tanto debes pensarlo dos veces (o medir el voltaje) antes de enchufar a... ¿ 110 o 220 Voltios ? se podÃa oir hablar todo el tiempo en el festival. Nada malo paso gracias a la atención y sofisticada colección de adaptadores y convertidores de energia que se disponÃa.
Un periodista de "TecnologÃa.bo", publicación boliviana pendiente del mundo de la computación, llego para entrevistar a los diferentes participantes y tomar fotos. Posteriormente una periodista de una estación de radio (Laser 98) con un
programa en vivo relacionado a la tecnologÃa hizo una entrevista al aire a Hardy Beltran M.
¿ Exito o fiasco ?
El lugar estuvo totalmente lleno desde la 1:00 PM cuando la fiesta fue abierta hasta las 7:00 PM aproximadamente, 2 horas despues del cierre oficial del vento.
"25 personas se inscribieron para traer sus computadoras al evento, pero solo 6 llegaron con sus respectivas máquinas. Extraño, desconocemos la razón de esta actitud - y durante el evento yo estuve con miedo de que esto fracase", xplica Hardy Beltran M.
Entonces nuevas personas empezaron a llegar; personas que no se inscribieron, ue no sabiamos de su llegada con anticipación. Algunos cargando sus computadoras preguntaban sobre Linux. Otros trajeron diferentes distribuciones Linux y ofrecieron su ayuda. Finalmente un grupo de personas interesadas llegaron: algunos solo buscando información o una demostración de Linux, otros simplemente buscaban hablar y pasar el rato, finalmente algunos trajeron dispositivos y revistas. Para ese momento habia un chico con una camara fotográfica ultra compacta (que es un poco mas pequeña que la Canon Ixus y compatible con gPhoto) y además habÃa un muchacho con el último número de una revista Linux brasilera, explica Hardy con una sonrisa.
El evento estuvo planeado para cerrar a las 05:00 PM, pero (otra vez de cuerdo a la "hora boliviana") a las 07:00 PM la gente termino su trabajo, configurando la última GUI. Todo el grupo de instaladores y activistas se fueron a un bar por un par de cervezas, para evaluar el dÃa. Si las 25 personas que se inscribieron hubieran llegado, esto pudo haber sido increible. Pero por alguna razón ellos no llegaron, sin embargo el evento fue un exito en establecer contactos entre la ente de La Paz interesada o activa en la comunidad Linux. Además el evento funcionó como un gran "proyecto de demostración" para gente con actividades complementarias que sólo escuchó sobre Linux, ¡ Un proyecto piloto !. El siguiente evento ya esta siendo planeado: Una noche con la presentación del Documental "Revolution OS" sobre el movimiento del Software Libre.

Time for jungle
I have been in Bolivia for two and a half month, and during my stay I havenâ??t been below 3000 meters. After all the talk about altitudes I think it is now time to go looking for something different. Thanks to my friend from the research institute â??Rumbos Boliviaâ?? I am now going to the jungle. He is giving me good advices on where to go and what to bring, so I wont feel too stupid from the very beginning. I am going to sail down some Amazon alike river in the kind of boat Indiana Jones would choose. I have bought fish hooks, and plan to give fishinga try. Pirana fish should be quite comon. I need to find a practical solution on bringing my digital camera. More about this later.

First Linux install party in La Paz, Bolivia (or: "Linux installation at 11.784 feet (Any higher?)")
Last weekend a historical event for the Linux community took place: The worlds highest ‘Linux install event’ in La Paz, Bolivia - 11.000 feet above the sea.
La Paz. Bolivia: 11.000 feet above the sea there is much less oxygen than you are used to - and you’ll be dragging yourself up at even the smallest hill in the city. Water boils at just 88 degrees Celsius (190,40 degrees Fahrenheit) because of the low air pressure – and my girlfriends skin cream came crawling out of its tube (looking like a long, brown worm) because of the difference in pressure between here and Copenhagen Airport which we had left 36 hours earlier.

In the cold highland with a spectacular view to the Andes Mountains covered by snow, you hardly notice that you are close to equator and jungles of anacondas and jaguars. Here the world’s highest Linux install event took place Saturday the 12 of December, 11.000 feet above the sea. It was the first of its kind in this part of Bolivia – and maybe a world record when it comes to altitudes and Linux installs events?

A few people from La Paz arranged “Festival de installation Linux”. Everything was done for the first time: Posters, the logo, the website, the mail form for signing up and a lot more.
“Yes, it is a lot of work, but it feels good to do something tangible for the Linux community,” says Hardy Beltran who has been one of the main forces in the preparations of the event.
Thanks to economical support from the organization “Free Software” in Denmark it was possible to give away free Linux CDs to every participant and cover expenses for posters, a network card and other things necessary to make the event possible.
People show up
The event was announced to start a 01:00 PM, so at according to ‘Bolivian time’ 01:30 people began to show up. Within half an hour the place was totally crowded with people, machines and different gadgets –and so it continued for the rest of the day. The sound of around 30 people talking and discussing Linux filled the place, the air temperature raised - and so did the attention on the machines that now booted with a Red Hat welcome screen.
"220 or 110 volts" – and the press is here...
An interesting, technical aspect of La Paz is that you'll find two parallel electricity networks: On of 110 volts and one of 220 volts. You'll also find two different plugs - and there is no way to know which is which. You therefore have to think twice (or measure the voltage) before plugging in ... “220 or 110 voltage” you heard all the time as the festival was going on –. Nothing bad happened thanks to attention and a sophisticated collections of adapters and power converters.
A journalist from “Technologia.bo”, a Bolivian ComputerWorld type magazine showed up to interviewing different participant and take photos. Later a journalist from a radio station with a technology related show made a live interview with Hardy Beltran.
Success or fiasco?
The place was totally crowded from 1:00 pm when the party opened until around 7:00 PM, two hour past the official scheduled closing time.
“25 people signed up for the event with their computers, but only six of these actually showed up with their machines. Strange. We don’t know the reason for this - and during the event I was afraid that it was going to be a flop”, Hardy Beltram explains.
“But then new people started showing up; people who hadn’t signed up, and that we didn’t know beforehand. Some brought their computers, asking for Linux. Other brought different Linux distributions and offered to help. And finally a group of generally interested people showed up: Some looking for information and a demonstration of Linux, other simply wanted to talk and hang out – and finally some brought different gadgets or magazines. For instance there was a guy with the ultra compact camera (which is a lot smaller than a Canon Ixus – and compatible with gPhoto). And a guy with latest issue of some Brazilian Linux magazine,” Hardy explains with a smile.
The event was planed to shut down at 05:00 PM, so (once again according to ‘Bolivian Time’) at 07:00 PM people finished their work, configuring the last GUI. The entire group of install activist went for beer at the local bar, evaluating the day. If the 25 people signed up had actually showed up it would have been incredible. For some reason they didn’t, but the event succeeded in establishing contact between people from La Paz interested or active in the Linux community. Furthermore the event worked as a great “demonstration project” for people on the sideline who just heard about Linux. What a pilot-project! Next event is already being planed: An evening with the showing of the documentary “RevolutionOS” about the Free Software movement.

A hora las fotos del festival de instalación de Linux están en el internet. Hemos seleccionado alrededor de 30 fotos de los 120 fotos, que fueron sacados durante el evento. Så er der billeder fra lørdagens install-fest i La Paz, Bolivia - som var en stor oplevelse. SSLUG har været så flinke at lægge båndbredde til, og "Foreningen Fri Software" støttede økonomisk.
